Who Was Shamgar?

In the days of Shamgar, the Philistines were oppressors of Israel. Shamgar slew 600 of the Philistines with an ox goad showing that even one man, with the help of God, can make a difference. We find nothing more written of Shamgar beyond Judges Chapter 3 but God saw fit that his act of heroics would be recorded in the history of His people.

Who Are the "Sons of Shamgar"?

The Sons of Shamgar is our Men's Ministry composed of men from Somers Avenue who commit to being male spiritual leaders for our families, congregation, and community. We devote ourselves to prayer, scripture, service and fellowship so that we may encourage and strengthen one another.

Shamgar was able to save Israel by striking down 600 Philistines. We believe that our men's ministry, with God's help, can strike down whatever obstacles that stand between the men of Somers and their service to God. And, like Shamgar, help save the lost in our community.

How do we accomplish these goals?

1. We pray daily for this ministry.
2. We learn scriptures and put them in our hearts so that we can be strong in our fight against Satan.
3. We hold each other accountable by meeting weekly and giving our members permission to ask each of us hard questions.
4. We encourage each other to pick up a towel and basin and make a difference in our community by being servants.

We believe one of the most effective ways to reach people with the message of Jesus Christ is through real and relevant acts of service.

Why Participate In Sons of Shamgar?

You will find a blessing in connecting with other men at Somers Avenue. The world would have us believe that we must "go it alone" and rely on our own strength and understanding. However, Jesus shows us the opposite. With God as their center, Jesus developed a group of men who changed the known world by being living examples of Christianity.

Proverbs 27:17 says "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."

We have found this to be true in the relationships forged through the Sons of Shamgar.
